Buddha or Bust byPerry Garfinkle - this guy travelled to quite a few places associated with the Buddha.
INDIA by Stanley Wolpert -an amazing book on India. Wolpert taught about india at UCLA for years,reading this book is like taking a class on it's history,culture and politics.
Along the Path,a meditator's companion to the Buddha's land - sort of a tour guide do the meditator, places to see and how to experience them.
Passage Through India by Gary Snyder the poet. These are excerpts from his journals of a trip he took to India with Allen Ginsberg in the early 60's.
Nine Lives -In Search of the Sacred in India by William Dalrymple. Each chapter concerns another type of religion or believer in India; Buddhists,Jains, Hindus, Sadhus etc. if you ever go to I Ida read everything you can by William Dalrymple.
Then there are the novels.
